The Plain

The Plain

La Piana, or Castello district, was the first part of the town to be inhabited by the Pomarican population. In an old manuscript from the parish of Pomarico, it is mentioned that this area was built around the middle of the 9th century. The name derives from an ancient fortress built by one of the first lords of Pomarico, of which only a few ruins remain. It stands on an area  in the shape of a truncated cone, 445 meters above sea level,  with steep and steep slopes, and extends for a length of about 300 meters. These characteristics, especially the small surface area, confirm the fact that its first inhabitants were fugitives.
